When you’re trying to safeguard your business, it feels natural to download antivirus software for extra protection. But what if the “antivirus” is actually the danger?

Unfortunately, that risk is very real.

Cyber criminals are becoming highly skilled at creating counterfeit websites that look almost identical to genuine ones. A recent case involved a fake version of a well-known cyber security provider’s site – complete with the same branding, layout, and a prominent download button.

But clicking that button didn’t provide security. Instead, it triggered the download of a file called StoreInstaller.exe. Hidden inside was VenomRAT (Remote Access Trojan), a powerful form of malware. Once installed, it gives attackers full control of your device without your knowledge. They can steal passwords, capture keystrokes, access webcams, and install more malicious software.

In this attack, the criminals were after more than information. They were targeting login credentials and cryptocurrency wallet details, aiming to either cash out directly or sell access to others.

And it’s not limited to antivirus software. Fake websites impersonating banks, IT providers, and other trusted services are increasingly common. What makes them especially dangerous is that many are hosted on reputable platforms like Amazon, making them look legitimate at first glance.

The consequences for businesses can be devastating. From stolen company data and exposed client records to financial losses and reputational damage – the fallout is costly and stressful.

How to protect your business

The best defence is vigilance:

  • Check website URLs carefully before downloading anything.
  • Avoid clicking on links in emails or messages unless you’re absolutely certain they’re genuine.
  • Only download software from official vendor websites.
  • Partner with a trusted IT provider (like GZD) who can help verify software sources and keep your systems secure.

Cyber criminals rely not just on clever tricks, but on people being busy, distracted, or simply trying to do the right thing. A little extra caution today can prevent a major security breach tomorrow.
