When was the last time you thought about how you log in to your accounts—or how secure those logins actually are?

For decades, passwords have been the go-to method for protecting our accounts. But let’s be honest: passwords are frustrating. They’re easy to forget, often reused, and a major target for cybercriminals.

That’s where passkeys come in — and Microsoft is finally making them much easier to use in Windows.

What exactly is a passkey?

A passkey is a modern, more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Instead of typing a string of characters that could be stolen or guessed, you can sign in using your face, fingerprint, or a secure device PIN.

Behind the scenes, passkeys rely on advanced cryptography. There’s no actual password to steal, because the passkey is made up of two parts: one stored securely on your device and one held by the service you’re logging into.

They work together like a lock and key—but the key never leaves your device. This makes it far harder for phishing scams or hackers to gain access to your accounts.

Better passkey integration in Windows 11

Until recently, using passkeys on Windows could be clumsy. It often meant relying on third-party apps, and setup wasn’t always straightforward.

Microsoft is changing that with new features in Windows 11 designed to make passkeys simpler to create, manage, and use across your devices.

A major update includes a new partnership with 1Password, allowing users to sync their passkeys more seamlessly within Windows 11.

And if you prefer a different password manager, there’s good news—Microsoft has also introduced new tools to make integration easier for other platforms too.

In short, your passkeys will now work better with the security tools your business already uses.

The move toward a password-free future

These upgrades are currently being tested in the latest Windows 11 preview build, but it’s clear that Microsoft is fully committed to a passwordless future.

In fact, the Microsoft Authenticator app is retiring its password management feature, with passkeys becoming the new default sign-in method for Microsoft accounts.

Passkeys are more secure, more convenient, and far less hassle than juggling endless passwords. And with Windows now making them easier to adopt, it’s the perfect time to start preparing your business for this shift.
