When was the last time you opened Notepad and wished you could make text bold, add headings, or use bullet points? Probably never.

But Microsoft has quietly introduced a small yet useful upgrade to Notepad that could make a noticeable difference—especially if you use it for jotting down quick notes, meeting minutes, or team checklists.

Notepad has always been valued for its speed and simplicity. It opens instantly, saves quickly, and doesn’t distract you. That’s exactly why it’s been such a favourite tool for decades.

Now, Microsoft is trialling light formatting features. These include bold and italic text, hyperlinks, headings, and even simple bullet lists. The goal isn’t to turn Notepad into a heavy word processor, but to make notes clearer and easier to read.

The new features are based on markdown, a widely used, no-fuss system that lets you add structure to plain text using simple symbols. For example, wrapping a word in asterisks makes it bold. It’s clean, lightweight, and still feels like Notepad. And if you don’t need formatting? You can simply switch it off.

Some worry that adding features risks slowing the app down, but in this case the update is minimal and optional—more like upgrading from a pencil to a fine pen, rather than replacing it with a printing press.

With WordPad now officially retired, there’s a clear gap for a tool that bridges the space between plain text and a full document editor. For medium-sized businesses in particular, this could be a practical middle ground. Structured notes can save time, improve clarity, and make internal communication more efficient.

It’s not a flashy change, but it’s a smart one. And it’s another sign that Microsoft is modernising even the most basic tools in Windows 11 without losing what made them useful in the first place.

If your business is running Windows 11, keep an eye out for this update—and next time you’re making a to-do list or project note, try out those bold headings.
