Microsoft has issued a warning about a sophisticated phishing scam where cybercriminals impersonate trusted sources to trick you into revealing login details. This scam targets popular cloud platforms such as SharePoint and OneDrive.

While these services are generally secure, scammers have discovered ways to bypass privacy settings and avoid security checks.

These criminals gain access to your cloud storage by either stealing your login credentials or purchasing them on the dark web.

Once inside, they upload a file designed to look legitimate – for example, a fake Microsoft 365 login page. They configure the file as “view-only” or restrict access to specific individuals, like you and your team.

Clicking on these files or any links within associated emails can have serious consequences for your business. Scammers could exploit your data to infiltrate your systems or deploy malware (malicious software) to steal information and disrupt operations.

Recovering from such attacks can be costly and time-consuming, not to mention the damage it could inflict on your business’s reputation.

Here’s how to protect your business:

  • Educate your team: Ensure your employees are aware of this new threat. Remind them to exercise caution when opening emails, even if they seem to come from trusted platforms.
  • Verify shared files: Always double-check the sender’s identity before opening any shared files. If something feels suspicious, contact the sender directly to confirm.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA): Use MFA across all devices to add an extra security layer by requiring a second piece of information, such as a code sent to your phone, along with your password.
  • Keep your security software updated: Regularly update your security tools to defend against the latest cyber threats effectively.
