Is your business still relying on Windows 10? It might be time to start planning your move to Windows 11.

Three years since its launch, Windows 11 is gaining significant traction, with its market share climbing to 35.55% as of October 2024. Meanwhile, Windows 10 still holds around 60.97%, but its dominance is gradually fading—and there are compelling reasons to upgrade sooner rather than later.

The biggest reason? From 14th October, Microsoft will no longer provide free support for Windows 10. While the operating system will still function, it won’t receive critical updates, leaving your business vulnerable to cyber threats and outdated security protocols.

Microsoft is offering an extended security update (ESU) plan for Windows 10, but at a cost—$30 (around R550) per device for just one extra year. And even then, it’s only a temporary fix.

Why is Windows 11 adoption increasing?

A few key factors are driving interest in Windows 11. The PC market is experiencing a resurgence, partly due to the rise of “AI PCs”—devices built to handle advanced AI-driven tasks. Businesses want to ensure their hardware is compatible with the latest software, including Windows 11. There’s also growing anticipation around “Windows Intelligence,” a potential rebranding of Windows 11’s AI-powered features.

But upgrading isn’t just about staying current with technology. Windows 11 delivers a more seamless and intuitive experience, with enhancements like customisable widgets and an improved File Explorer to help boost productivity.

Stronger security for your business

One of the biggest advantages of Windows 11 is its enhanced security, designed to better protect against modern cyber threats, including:

  • Ransomware – Malicious software that locks you out of your files until a ransom is paid (with no guarantee of recovery).
  • Phishing attacks – Fraudulent attempts to steal sensitive information, often via fake emails or websites.

If you’re not ready to upgrade just yet, Microsoft’s one-year security extension can buy you some time. But delaying the transition means missing out on the performance and security benefits Windows 11 has to offer.
