Embracing the evolution beyond traditional passwords
Can you envision a world where those complex, easily forgotten passwords become a relic of the past?
Well, Google has recently adopted Passkeys as the new default sign-in method for personal accounts, signalling a shift towards a more secure online future.
Wondering what Passkeys are?
They represent the cutting-edge in internet security. And for business owners overseeing staff, this innovation demands attention.
Imagine accessing your account with a simple four-digit PIN or your biometric data like fingerprints or facial recognition. That’s the convenience a Passkey offers.
Seems straightforward, right? But don’t be fooled by its simplicity. This technology significantly decreases the risk of cyber theft or account takeover.
How do Passkeys operate?
Setting up a Passkey is a breeze. Visit Google’s official Passkeys website, establish a PIN or link your biometrics (fingerprint or face), sync your smartphone, and you’re set.
Keep in mind, your PC should run Windows 10 or higher, or macOS Ventura for Mac users. For phones, Android 9 or iOS 16 is required.
Currently, this feature is compatible with Microsoft Edge, Safari, and Google Chrome browsers.
What are the advantages of Passkeys?
Google reports that 64% of users find Passkeys more user-friendly than traditional login methods.
Not only are they simpler and more secure, but they’re also faster. Logging in with a Passkey is 40% quicker than using a regular password.
What’s on the horizon?
Google’s move to make Passkeys the default sign-in method is just the beginning. Collaborating with selected partners, the tech giant aims to extend this new login feature to Chrome and Android. It’s already operational on Uber and eBay, with WhatsApp integration planned soon.
It might be worth considering how Passkeys could benefit your business. Google could soon introduce this feature for business accounts too.
In the interim, if you’re unsure about adopting Passkeys, there’s an opt-out option. Visit the Sign-in options page, locate “Skip Password When Possible,” and deactivate it.
We’d recommend giving it a try though.
