Fluid Dictation in Windows 11: Work Faster, Type Less

Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Fluid Dictation, designed to make voice typing more natural, more accurate, and—importantly—less irritating.
So what exactly is Fluid Dictation?
At its simplest, it’s a major enhancement to Windows 11’s existing dictation tool, powered by on-device artificial intelligence (AI).
The biggest improvements are in how it cleans up your speech automatically. You’ll see fewer filler words like “um” or “like” slipping into your text, and punctuation such as commas and full stops is handled with far more accuracy.
It also improves your grammar as you speak, meaning the draft you end up with looks more polished from the start—no lengthy clean-ups required.
While this all sounds convenient, it also has real value for businesses.
Picture your team dictating meeting minutes without spending time rewriting them afterwards. Or field staff capturing job notes hands-free while working on-site, with the text coming out clean enough to send straight to a client.
Less manual editing equals more time saved—and that matters for every business.
If privacy is on your mind, Microsoft has clarified that all processing happens locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to the cloud, so whatever you dictate stays private. Sensitive areas like password fields also disable dictation automatically, which is reassuring.
There is one catch: Fluid Dictation is currently only supported on the latest Copilot+ PCs—Windows 11 devices specifically built to run AI features on-device. If you’re using a standard Windows 11 machine right now, the feature won’t appear just yet.
Still, it’s a clear sign of what’s ahead. More natural, accurate and efficient dictation tools are becoming standard, and for South Africa’s small and medium-sized businesses, this could be one of those quiet upgrades that subtly improves everyday productivity.
