Microsoft continues to ramp up its AI integration, and the latest development could see Copilot launching automatically when you open Microsoft Edge.

At the moment, using Copilot in Edge requires clicking the small icon in the sidebar—simple enough.

However, the proposed change would mean Copilot opens by default in the sidebar as soon as you launch your browser or open a new tab.

Some users will welcome this always-on AI assistant, while others might prefer a cleaner interface. Either way, it’s clear that Microsoft is moving towards making Copilot a core part of the Edge browsing experience.

Another feature currently being tested is an “Ask Copilot” button within the Settings menu. This would allow users to get help from Copilot directly when adjusting browser settings—saving time and frustration by avoiding lengthy searches through menus.

If your business uses Edge, here are some potential benefits:

  • Faster issue resolution: Having trouble with something in Edge? Instead of Googling or calling IT support, you could ask Copilot directly.
  • AI support, always ready: Whether you’re summarising content, drafting a message, or composing an email, Copilot would be instantly available.
  • Improved online security: Microsoft is also trialling an AI-powered “Scareware Blocker” designed to detect and block scam websites in real-time.

It’s not yet confirmed when—or if—these features will be released. Microsoft often tests new functionality in Edge Canary (its experimental version), and not every feature makes it to the main browser.

That said, with Microsoft’s current push towards AI adoption, it’s likely these tools will become permanent features.

Automatic Copilot launch could be a great enhancement if you like the idea of having an AI assistant ready to go. But if you prefer a more minimalist browsing setup, it might feel intrusive.

Privacy is also a key consideration. Microsoft hasn’t yet explained how the always-on functionality will work, and some users may be uneasy about it. Hopefully, options will be provided to disable or limit this feature.

If rolled out thoughtfully, Copilot could become a powerful tool in Microsoft Edge—boosting productivity, streamlining support, and enhancing online security.
