“Ask Copilot” is coming to your Taskbar — but only if you want it to.

Ever wish your PC understood what you were trying to do without forcing you to hunt through menus or sift through endless search results?

Microsoft is moving in that direction.

A new feature called Ask Copilot has appeared in the latest Windows 11 preview build, and it’s taking a prominent spot right on the taskbar.

Until now, the Windows taskbar search box has simply helped you locate files, apps, and basic system settings.

Ask Copilot upgrades that box with AI.

It can interpret what you’re trying to achieve and guide you straight to the right action. Not just results—actual assistance.

Imagine typing things like:

  • “Open the invoice template from last month”
  • “Connect to the meeting room projector”
  • “How do I split a PDF?”

Rather than merely showing options, Copilot can do the task for you: open the file, change the setting, or give you the quick answer you need.

It’s the same familiar search field, just far more intelligent and helpful.

You’ll also see new icons next to the Ask Copilot box, giving instant access to:

  • Copilot Vision – for understanding what’s on your screen
  • Voice commands – for when speaking is faster than typing

If you’re worried this feels a bit too AI-driven, don’t stress — the feature is fully opt-in.

You’ll only see Ask Copilot after manually enabling it under Settings → Personalisation → Taskbar → Ask Copilot.

If you don’t switch it on, your standard search experience remains unchanged.

Microsoft has also clarified that Copilot isn’t gaining any extra access to your information. It uses the same mechanisms as regular Windows Search — no hidden file scanning or data snooping.

Why this matters for your business

Two things: time and focus.

Your staff won’t lose minutes (or hours) each week hunting for documents, tweaking settings, or Googling how to do simple tasks. Copilot helps them get it done instantly, which adds up to a more streamlined workday — the type where technology quietly supports productivity instead of slowing it down.

Ask Copilot is still in testing, but judging by Microsoft’s pace, we can expect a wider rollout before long.

So, when it lands:
Will your business switch it on, or stick with classic search for now?
Either way, the choice is entirely yours.
