As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft is changing its approach by discontinuing free support and security updates for Windows 10.

The concept of paying for updates may raise some eyebrows, but let’s view this in context. By 2025, Windows 10 will have been around for a decade, and Microsoft is likely to have introduced Windows 12, with Windows 11 already available today.

Maintaining support for multiple aging operating systems can be challenging, even for a tech giant like Microsoft.

Although 2025 may seem distant, it’s wise to start considering your options now. Here they are:

Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11
Microsoft recommends switching to Windows 11, which offers fantastic features and free updates until its end of life.

Option 2: Stick with Windows 10 and Pay
Staying with Windows 10 is an option, but you’ll need to pay for security updates (no new features, though). The exact cost is still unknown, but it will likely be a subscription for monthly updates.

Option 3: Stick with Windows 10 and Avoid Updates
While you can continue using Windows 10 without paying, it’s not advisable. Without updates, your business’s PCs become vulnerable to threats and security issues. Plus, without Microsoft’s support, even tech experts like us have no recourse for help. This option is not recommended!

The decision deadline is October 2025, so there’s no need to rush. However, for a thriving business this year, we highly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 sooner rather than later. You’ll immediately benefit from features that can enhance your processes and simplify your team’s tasks.
